Pizza Dinners

Hey Folks, Josh here. I LOVE pizza. Really, I seriously am obsessed. I think about pizza all the time. I eat pizza all the time. I make pizza all the time. I have Pizza socks.

And I love to make dough. I love our sourdough starter (first name Zelda). I love great wheat and flour. I love our grain mill. I love developing gluten. I love folding dough. I love the aroma of properly fermented dough. I love when the dough is perfectly proofed. I love to stretch and shape it.

I love pizza toppings: so many flavors, textures, cheeses, meats, veggies. I love topping a just shaped pizza. I love launching the pizza into the oven and the smell of the toasting crust. I love pulling the pizza at just the right moment, and finishing with some olive oil, or a crunch of salt or twist of pepper.

And then, I LOVE to take a breath, admire the beauty of the slice, and take my first bite of pizza!

Our Story with Un-Plated

Celebrating 14 years of SDC with a special dinner telling our story over the years through food, with special storyteller guest Un-Plated.

Our friend Sabrina Medora launched her own platform, Un-Plated, sharing the compelling stories of chefs and educating readers on the challenges and successes of opening, owning, and operating restaurants. We are thrilled to co-host these special dinners with her, going through milestones in SDC’s 14 year history: SDC (the start with Josh and Christine), HBFC (the big accidental hit), TRIBECCA’S CUBANO (Becca’s breakout), CAMCHI KIMCHI (Cam’s take the jarred fermented veggies), and THE FUTURE OF SDC (the evolution of SDC with Alex). Sabrina will be crafting a written piece to support these dinners.

Jewish Dinners

Our September Dinners are inspired by our love of Jewish deli/grandma food. We are talkin’ ‘bout the old school stuff: pastrami, matzo ball soup, latkes, lox and bagels, braised brisket, and halvah. Of course, we put an SDC spin on all the dishes (where else ya gonna get a pastrami egg roll with russian dressing and mustard dipping sauces??) but the spirit of Jewish food runs through it.

We’ve been starting a tradition of doing Steak Dinners every summer, but this year’s menu is anything but traditional. Moving a little away from the common “steakhouse food” vibe, but still with that big shrimp cocktail/big bold flavors/slice of big cake spirit, we went in a more Japanese direction with the ingredients and flavors. Y’all know we LOVE us some Spanish food, particularly Rossejat. You know: the toasted angel hair pasta dish, soaked up with smokey soffitto, studded with chorizo, and slathered with garlicky allioli. It’s kiiiiiind of a cult fave at SDC, and we support that. (Mostly because we, ourselves, also have a cult like devotion to it.)  For our first true SUMMER menu at SDC this year, we thought we would throw down some Spanish food, with Rossejat as the main course stunner.

SDC IS 15 YEARS OLD THIS YEAR!  From very humble beginnings of our parents eating in our own backyards, to a full fledged top notch (if we can be so bold) dining experience for our 8,000 strong community diner network - we couldn’t be more proud of our journey. We’ll be hosting several special dinners to celebrate, including this one, our annual BURGER DINNERS, with the throwback burger we used to serve at the Green City Market for many years: Fresh Ground Beef, Horseradish Cheddar, Arugula, Bacon, Pickled Ramps, Green Garlic Aioli, on a Potato Bun, served with Fried Pickled Onion Strings and Sriracha Aioli.
